Lessons from being a Judge:

A judgeship is viewed as a position of power; I look at it as a position of service. I understand that life is complicated and difficult to navigate. For me, the final outcome was not always punishment, sometimes what’s needed is positive re-direction.

Over time I learned that people rarely arrive in a courtroom at their best. Most of them are carrying years of strain, hurt or simple missteps that snowballed into something larger. The courtroom is not a factory and I felt my role wasn’t just to interpret the law, it was to fully recognize the human beings standing in front of me. Justice shouldn't only be about consequences; it should also be viewed as an opportunity to direct a path forward, to restore balance and help someone see that their future doesn’t have to be defined by their past mistakes.

Behind every case was someone trying to make sense of circumstances that may have been shaped by pressure, fear or simply a lack of information and guidance. Sitting on the bench gave me a unique vantage point to see both the harm done and the potential that still remained.

I made a commitment not to pass judgment in a vacuum but to weigh the human reality alongside the law. Accountability matters, but so does the opportunity to course-correct. I found that many times a firm hand along with a constructive path forward produced better results than simply pronouncing punishment. In that sense, to me service meant recognizing that justice is not just a system of penalties, it’ can and should be a framework for helping people reclaim stability, dignity and direction.
